The redesign of the central bus station (ZOB) is a milestone for the city of Leverkusen in the transformation from the car-friendly city of the 1950s to a modern, intermodal transport concept. In a second construction phase, the entire area will be reorganized to include additional functions such as a bicycle parking garage, waiting and service rooms, a new connection to the Rhein-Ruhr-Express and the cycle path network.
The focus of the architecture is the light, floating roof of the central bus platform. Translucent membranes are inserted into the supporting steel construction, which provide shade during the day and at the same time allow daylight to pass through. The lighting system consisting of outdoor spotlights OS3 1065 by InstaLighting uses the membranes as a reflective surface and sets additional accents through a play of light and shadow. The daylight-dependent lighting control reduces the need for artificial lighting. A very important point for economic efficiency, which is also increased by the robust and low-maintenance materials.
